Kidepo Valley National Park

Uganda's Most Isolated and Most Maginificent Park

Kidepo is Uganda’s most isolated national park, but the few who make the long journey north through the wild frontier region of Karamoja would agree that it is also the most magnificent, for Kidepo ranks among Africa’s finest wildernesses. From Apoka, in the heart of the park, a savannah landscape extends far beyond the gazetted area, towards horizons outlined by distant mountain ranges.

Background Info

The Kidepo Valley National Park is one of Uganda’s most spectacular parks. It is 1,442 square kilometres and harbours scenery unsurpassed in any other park in East Africa. ‘It could not be any better’ is a common comment on the scenery by visitors who often promise and do come back to Kidepo. Tucked into the corner of Uganda’s border with Sudan and Kenya, the park offers breathtaking Savannah landscapes, which end in rugged horizon. A huge latitudinal range and correspondingly wide climatic conditions have evolved an extremely diverse flora. As a result the variety of animal species in the park is equally abundant including many which are found no where else in Uganda. The vegetation can best be described as open tree Savannah which varies much in structure and composition. Mountain forest dominates some of the high places, while areas along the Lorupei River support dense Acacia geradi forest. The flora and fauna of the park are more typical of Kenya than the rest of Uganda. The landscape throughout the park is studded with small hills, rocky outcrops and inselbergs from which one can obtain stunning views in all directions. Culturally this part of Uganda is fascinating. This is home to two distinctive ethnic groups with highly cherished traditions: the Karamajong and the Ik. The only lodge in the park, Apoka Safari lodge sits in the middle of its majesty.

What to see and do

Game Viewing:
A park ranger will help you spot the lions that may be sitting on the valley’s various rocks. Other wildlife includes elephants, leopard, bush duiker, jackal, bushbuck, bush pig, ostrich, buffalo and much more, in the wild Narus Valley.

Birding:
Apoka Rest Camp is a great spot to begin your Kidepo birding experience. Birding can also be done on the fringes of the Narus and Namamukweny Valleys.

Hiking / Nature Walks:
Hike to the Lomej Mountains, take leisurely walks through the Narus Vally, meet members of the endangered IK tribe and wander the splendid Kidepo River Valley between banks of borassus palm forest.

Cultural Encounters:
The cattle-herding Karamojong occupy the north-east of Uganda, in an area covering one tenth of the country. Discover the unique culture of this remote tribe with the Lorukul Cultural Group, located just outside Kidepo Valley National Park.

Climate

Kidepo valley national park has semi arid climate characteristic of the north eastern part of Uganda where it is located. It has only one rainy season and the rains are really light. Temperatures in the valleys range from 21.5°C to 34°C and annual rainfall amounts to about 890mm.

The rainy months are April May June July and August, while the hot months are pretty much the rest of the year, with some months December to February being hotter and dustier than the rest.

It might sometimes get cold but climate in Kidepo does not very much. The best time for game viewing in the park is the dry season, you can get some good wildlife views in the rainy season, but it is best for birding.
